UPI not working usually has a simple cause: a blocked PIN, a bank server issue, a missing SIM, an old app, or a daily limit you have already used. The fix depends on the error message you see, so read it before you retry.
Below are the 10 most common reasons, how to spot each one and what to do. If you think the whole UPI network is down, first read our guide on how to check if UPI is down. This guide covers problems that affect only you, your bank or your app.
UPI not working? Quick answer: error and fix
| Problem | How you can tell | Quick fix |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong PIN entered too many times | Error mentions PIN or “limit exceeded” | Wait 24 hours or reset the PIN |
| Bank server down or under maintenance | “Bank server not reachable”, pending status | Use another bank account or wait |
| SIM not in phone / no SMS balance | App asks you to verify again | Insert the bank-linked SIM, re-verify |
| Old app version | Random failures, missing options | Update the app from the Play Store or App Store |
| Daily limit used | Error after several payments in one day | Wait for the limit to reset |
| Debit card expired or replaced | PIN reset fails with card error | Reset the PIN with the new card |
| Account frozen or KYC pending | All UPI apps fail for one account | Contact your bank branch |
| Weak internet | Payment times out or shows pending | Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data |
| Receiver’s bank down | Only payments to one person fail | Ask the receiver for another UPI ID |
| Inactive UPI ID | Account missing or needs setup again | Re-register in the app |

Who this guide is for
- Your payment fails but your friends and family can pay without trouble.
- UPI stopped working after you changed your phone, SIM or debit card.
- You see an error you do not understand, such as “transaction declined” or “bank not reachable”.
- Payments worked yesterday but fail today after several transactions.
Why is UPI not working? 10 reasons explained
1. Wrong UPI PIN attempts
If you enter a wrong PIN more than 3 times, Google Pay’s help page says you must either wait 24 hours or reset your UPI PIN to pay again. Other apps follow a similar rule, but check your app. Resetting is the faster route. See our forgot UPI PIN guide.
Example: you try your old PIN twice, then a guess, then another guess. On the fourth wrong try, payments stop. If you reset the PIN with your debit card or Aadhaar (where your bank allows it), you can pay again right away instead of waiting a full day.
2. Your bank’s server is down
Banks do planned maintenance, often after midnight. On 3 October 2026, for example, SBI UPI was unavailable from 00:15 to 01:00 IST. Errors during this time often say “bank server not reachable” or the payment stays pending. Our SBI UPI not working guide shows how to check SBI’s notices.
3. The bank-linked SIM is not in the phone
UPI apps bind your account to the mobile number registered with the bank. If that SIM is missing, inactive, or moved to another slot, the app may ask you to verify again. Make sure the SIM can send SMS, since many apps verify by sending one.

4. An old app version
NPCI changes rules from time to time, and apps update to follow them. An outdated app can fail at random. Update it and restart your phone.
5. Transaction or daily limit reached
Each bank sets its own daily UPI limit within NPCI’s caps, and many apps also cap the number of transactions per day. Limits vary by bank and app, so check the limit in your bank app. Separately, since 1 August 2025, each UPI app allows only 50 balance checks per day.
Example: say your bank’s daily cap is ₹50,000 (this is only an example; your bank’s figure may differ). You pay ₹30,000 rent in the morning and then try to send ₹25,000 to a relative in the evening. The second payment fails because the total would cross the cap, even though your account has enough money. Pay the balance the next day, or use NEFT or IMPS through net banking. Our guide on the maximum limit of UPI explains how limits work.
6. Debit card expired or changed
The old PIN may keep working, but if you need to reset it, the app will ask for details of a valid debit card. Keep the new card handy.
7. Account frozen, dormant or KYC pending
If your bank has put a debit freeze on the account, UPI payments will fail even if the app looks fine. Only the bank can lift this. Visit the branch with your KYC documents. If you think your UPI ID itself has been blocked, read how to unblock a UPI ID.
8. Poor internet
A payment that times out may show as pending. Check your history before paying again so you do not pay twice.
9. Problem on the receiver’s side
If the receiver’s bank is down, your payment fails even though your side is fine. Try paying to another UPI ID of the same person, or pay later.
10. UPI ID deactivated for inactivity
In late 2023, NPCI asked banks and apps to deactivate UPI IDs and numbers that had no activity for one year. This was meant to stop money going to recycled mobile numbers. If yours was affected, re-register in the app and set up UPI again.
How to tell if UPI not working is your problem or the bank’s
Use this simple test before you change any settings.
| Test | Result | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Try a second UPI app with the same bank | Works | Your first app is the problem |
| Try a second bank account in the same app | Works | Your first bank is the problem |
| Ask someone with the same bank to pay | Also fails | The bank is likely down |
| Switch Wi-Fi to mobile data | Works | Your internet was the problem |
| Everything fails for everyone | Fails | Possible wider outage; read is UPI down |

Step-by-step fix when UPI is not working
- Read the exact error message and take a screenshot.
- Check your transaction history for a pending entry.
- Switch internet (Wi-Fi to mobile data or the reverse).
- Update the app and restart the phone.
- Try the same payment from a second bank account.
- Try a second UPI app with the same bank.
- If the error mentions the PIN, reset it instead of guessing again.
- If nothing works, raise a complaint in the app, then contact your bank.
What to do if UPI is not working after a phone or SIM change
- New phone, same number: install the app, sign in, and verify the bank-registered number again. The app sends an SMS from the SIM, so keep it in the phone.
- New number: first update your mobile number with your bank. The UPI app can only find accounts linked to the number the bank has on record.
- Dual-SIM phone: choose the SIM slot that holds the bank-registered number when the app asks.
- Ported number: if SMS cannot be sent for a while after porting, wait until the SIM is fully active, then verify again.
If money was debited but the payment failed
Under RBI’s turnaround time rules, a failed UPI payment where your account was debited but the receiver was not credited should be reversed automatically, usually by the next working day. If it is late, banks must pay compensation of ₹100 per day. If the money still does not come back, complain to the app, then the bank, then NPCI, and finally the RBI Ombudsman, in that order. Our UPI transaction failed guide covers each step.
Example: ₹1,500 leaves your account at a medical shop, the shop gets nothing and the app shows “failed”. Do not pay again from the same account until you see the final status. Pay with cash or another account, and track the reversal with the UTR number.
What to note before you contact support
Support teams solve problems faster when you give them the right details in the first message. Keep these ready:
- The UPI transaction ID (UTR) or reference number from the payment screen.
- Date, time and amount of the failed payment.
- The exact error message, as a screenshot.
- The UPI app and the bank account you used.
- Whether the money was debited from your account or not.
- What you have already tried, such as a second app or a PIN reset.
Common mistakes when UPI is not working
- Guessing the PIN again and again. This triggers the lock. Reset instead.
- Paying twice during a pending status. Wait for the final result first.
- Uninstalling the app straight away. You lose nothing, but you must register again, and it will not fix a bank-side issue.
- Calling a “UPI customer care” number from search results. Use only numbers on official bank or app websites.
- Ignoring the error text. The message usually tells you whether the PIN, the bank or the limit is the cause.
Safety tips
- Never share your UPI PIN, OTP or card details with anyone who calls to “fix” UPI.
- You do not need to enter your PIN to receive money.
- Do not download screen-sharing apps on a stranger’s request.
- Report fraud on 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in as soon as possible.

FAQs
Why is my UPI not working but my friend’s is?
The problem is likely your bank, app, SIM or PIN, not the UPI network. Try a different bank account or app.
How long is UPI blocked after wrong PIN attempts?
Google Pay says 24 hours after more than 3 wrong attempts. You can skip the wait by resetting the PIN. The rule may vary by app.
Can I use UPI without the bank-linked SIM?
Generally no. Apps verify the mobile number registered with your bank, usually through that SIM.
My payment is pending. Should I pay again?
No. Wait for the final status. Since August 2025, NPCI has asked apps to update pending payments faster, so the result should show soon.
Why is UPI not working only for large amounts?
You may have crossed your bank’s per-transaction or daily limit, or a lower limit that some banks apply for new UPI users. Limits vary by bank; check in your bank app.
Who do I contact if UPI keeps failing?
Start with the app’s help section, then your bank. Use only numbers listed on official websites.
Does reinstalling the app fix UPI not working?
Only if the app itself is the problem. For PIN, limit, SIM or bank issues, reinstalling does not help.
Conclusion
When UPI is not working, most fixes take minutes once you know the cause. Read the error, rule out your phone and app, try a second bank, and only then escalate. Find all our UPI help articles on the UPI guides hub.
