Forgot UPI PIN? You can set a new one yourself in a few minutes from your UPI app. You do not need to visit the bank. You only need one of two things: your debit card details, or your Aadhaar number with an OTP sent to the mobile number linked to Aadhaar.

The reset changes the PIN for that bank account on every UPI app, because the PIN belongs to your bank account, not to the app. This guide covers what you need, the exact steps with a debit card and with Aadhaar, what to do when the reset fails, and how to pick a PIN that is hard to guess.

Who this guide is for

  • You forgot your UPI PIN after not using one bank account for a while.
  • You entered the wrong PIN several times and UPI is now blocked.
  • You got a new debit card and want to set the PIN again.
  • You do not have a debit card and want to use Aadhaar instead.

What you need before you reset

  • The phone with the SIM of the mobile number registered with your bank.
  • Either an active debit card for that account, or Aadhaar linked to the same bank account.
  • For the Aadhaar route, your Aadhaar must be linked to the same mobile number that is registered with the bank account.
  • A working internet connection.

Not sure which mobile number is linked to your Aadhaar? Google Pay’s help page suggests checking it on the UIDAI website (uidai.gov.in) under My Aadhaar, then Aadhaar services, then Verify email/Mobile number.

Forgot UPI PIN: reset steps using a debit card

Menu names differ a little between apps, but the flow is the same.

  1. Open your UPI app and go to your profile or bank accounts section.
  2. Select the bank account whose PIN you forgot.
  3. Tap “Forgot UPI PIN” or “Reset UPI PIN”.
  4. Choose the debit card option and enter the card details the app asks for.
  5. Enter the OTP your bank sends by SMS.
  6. Set a new UPI PIN (4 or 6 digits, depending on your bank) and confirm it.

Example: resetting after a new debit card

Your old debit card expired and the bank sent a new one. You forgot your UPI PIN at a shop counter and the payment of ₹850 failed. Step aside, open the app, choose the account, tap Forgot UPI PIN and use the details of the new card, not the old one. The expired card will fail. Once the OTP arrives and you set the new PIN, scan the shop’s QR code again and pay.

Reset UPI PIN without a debit card (Aadhaar OTP)

Many apps now let you use Aadhaar instead of a card. Google Pay’s help page adds two conditions: the bank must allow Aadhaar verification, and if you first verified the account with a debit card, you may need to use the debit card to reset.

  1. Open the app and select your bank account.
  2. Tap “Forgot UPI PIN” and choose the Aadhaar option, if shown.
  3. Enter the Aadhaar digits the app asks for and give consent.
  4. Enter the OTP from UIDAI and the OTP from your bank, if asked.
  5. Set and confirm the new PIN.

If you do not see the Aadhaar option, your bank or app does not support it for your account yet. Use the debit card route or ask your bank. Our list of banks that support Aadhaar UPI can help.

Forgot UPI PIN vs change UPI PIN

If you still remember your current PIN and only want a new one, you do not need the forgot option. Apps have a separate “Change UPI PIN” option that asks for the old PIN first. In Google Pay, it sits under the bank account’s menu. Use “Forgot UPI PIN” only when you cannot recall the PIN or it is blocked.

Locked out after wrong PIN attempts?

Google Pay says that after more than 3 incorrect PIN entries you must wait 24 hours or reset the PIN to pay right away. Resetting is the faster fix. Other apps may follow a similar rule. If payments still fail after a reset, read how to unblock a UPI ID.

Common problems and fixes

“Incorrect Aadhaar number”Re-enter it carefully; contact your bank if it continues

Reset fails repeatedlyUpdate app, try another UPI app, or contact bank

Common mistakes when you forgot UPI PIN

  • Guessing more PINs. Each wrong try brings you closer to a lock. Reset instead.
  • Using the ATM PIN. The UPI PIN and ATM PIN are separate, so the ATM PIN may not work.
  • Using a card from another account. The card must belong to the same bank account.
  • Resetting during a bank outage. If the bank is down, the reset can fail too. Check is UPI down first.
  • Writing the new PIN on the phone cover. Anyone who picks up the phone can use it.

Tips for a safe UPI PIN

  • Avoid birth year, 1234, 0000 or your phone number digits.
  • Never share the PIN. Bank or app staff never need it.
  • You enter the PIN only to send money, never to receive it.
  • Use a different PIN from your ATM PIN.
  • Cover the screen when you type the PIN at a shop counter.

What to do if you forgot UPI PIN in these situations

Your debit card is blocked or lost

A blocked or lost card cannot be used to reset the PIN. Try the Aadhaar route if your bank and app support it. If not, ask your bank for a replacement card and reset once it is active. Meanwhile, pay from another bank account linked in your app.

You changed your mobile number

The OTP for a reset goes to the number your bank has on record. Update the new number with your bank first, then register it in the UPI app, and only then reset the PIN. For the Aadhaar route, your Aadhaar must also be linked to that same number.

You are travelling and the SIM has no signal

Without signal, the OTP may not arrive and the app may not verify the SIM. Wait until you are in an area with coverage, or pay in cash or by card until then. Do not keep retrying, because each failed attempt wastes time and can confuse the app.

An elderly parent forgot UPI PIN

Help them reset it on their own phone, with their own card or Aadhaar, so the PIN stays theirs. Let them type the new PIN themselves. Write down the steps, not the PIN, so they can repeat the process later. Remind them that nobody from the bank will ever ask for it.

The reset worked but you still cannot pay

The PIN may not be the real problem. Check whether the bank is down, whether you crossed a daily limit, or whether the account has a freeze. Our UPI not working guide lists 10 common causes with a fix for each.

FAQs

I forgot UPI PIN. Can I reset it without a debit card?

Yes, with Aadhaar OTP, if your bank and app support it and Aadhaar is linked to your bank account and mobile.

Will the new PIN work on all apps?

Yes. The UPI PIN is linked to the bank account, so it changes everywhere that account is used.

Is the UPI PIN the same as the ATM PIN?

No. They are separate. Changing one does not change the other.

Is there a charge to reset UPI PIN?

Apps do not charge for resetting. Normal SMS charges, if any, are set by your mobile operator.

How long after a reset can I pay?

Usually right away. Some banks may apply a short cooling period or lower limit after a reset; check in your app.

I forgot UPI PIN for only one of my two banks. What changes?

Only that bank account’s PIN changes. Your other bank account keeps its own PIN.

Can someone else reset my UPI PIN?

Only with your phone, your bank-registered SIM and your card or Aadhaar OTP. That is why you should never share OTPs or card details.

Conclusion

If you forgot UPI PIN, it is a five-minute fix. Keep your debit card or Aadhaar ready, use the bank-registered SIM, and pick a PIN nobody can guess. If UPI still fails after a reset, see UPI not working. All our UPI help articles are on the UPI guides hub.
