If you want to know how to increase UPI limit in HDFC, start with HDFC Bank’s own answer: UPI limits are set and standardised by NPCI, so users cannot increase or change them. For P2P and P2M payments, the HDFC limit stays at ₹1 lakh or 20 transactions in 24 hours.
That does not mean you are stuck. You can lift a temporary ₹5,000 cap, use the higher category limits for big bills, and send large sums through IMPS, NEFT or RTGS. This guide covers each step for HDFC account holders, with examples, a decision table and safety tips. For other banks and apps, see our UPI guides hub.
How to increase UPI limit in HDFC: quick answer
| What you want | Possible? | How |
|---|---|---|
| Raise P2P UPI above ₹1 lakh/day | No | Use IMPS, NEFT or RTGS instead |
| Remove ₹5,000 new-user cap | Yes, by waiting | Ends after the first 24 hours |
| Pay a mutual fund, broker or loan EMI above ₹1 lakh | Yes, in eligible categories | HDFC lists ₹2 lakh per transaction |
| Pay for an IPO | Yes | Up to ₹5 lakh per application |
| More than 20 UPI payments a day | No | Use UPI Lite for small spends, or another bank account |
Can you increase the UPI limit in HDFC?
HDFC Bank’s UPI limit page has a note saying that because the limits are set by NPCI, users cannot increase or make changes to them. So there is no form, branch request or app toggle that lifts the ₹1 lakh P2P cap. Be careful of anyone who calls offering to “upgrade” your UPI limit. HDFC Bank will not ask for your UPI PIN, OTP or card details for this.
The full list of HDFC limits is in our HDFC UPI transaction limit guide. Below are the four steps that do help.
Step 1: End the ₹5,000 cooling limit

HDFC Bank restricts new UPI users to ₹5,000 for the first 24 hours to protect against fraud. If your limit shows ₹5,000:
- Note when you registered UPI, changed phone or reset your UPI PIN.
- Wait 24 hours from that time. On some iPhone setups, apps apply a cooling limit for a few days; this may vary by bank/app, so check in your app.
- Do not reset your PIN again in between, as that can restart the period.
- Try the payment again. The ₹1 lakh limit returns automatically.
Example: Kiran registers UPI on a new HDFC account at 9 AM on Day 1. At 6 PM he tries to pay ₹20,000 to a contractor and it is declined. At 9 AM on Day 2, 24 hours have passed, and the ₹20,000 payment goes through at 10 AM. Had he set up UPI a day before the payment was due, there would have been no delay.
Step 2: Use the higher category limits

HDFC lists these higher per-transaction limits:
- ₹2 lakh for capital markets and merchant collect, such as AMCs, broking, mutual funds, credit card payments, loan repayments and EMIs.
- ₹5 lakh for IPO applications through UPI.
NPCI allowed even higher limits from 15 September 2025 for verified merchants (for example ₹5 lakh per payment for capital markets and insurance). HDFC’s page, checked on 30 October 2026, still shows ₹2 lakh, so the limit you get may vary. Ask HDFC Bank before a payment above ₹2 lakh.
Example: a ₹1.8 lakh credit card bill can be paid by UPI from an HDFC account in one go, since it is within ₹2 lakh. A ₹2.4 lakh bill may be declined; pay ₹2 lakh by UPI and the rest through NetBanking, or pay the full amount through NetBanking.
Step 3: Use NetBanking for large transfers

For sending more than ₹1 lakh to a person, use HDFC NetBanking or the HDFC Bank app:
| Method | Best for | Note |
|---|---|---|
| IMPS | Instant transfers, any time | Bank sets the daily cap |
| NEFT | Any amount, settles in batches | RBI sets no minimum or maximum |
| RTGS | ₹2 lakh and above | Real-time, for large amounts |
- Log in to NetBanking or the HDFC Bank app.
- Add the person as a beneficiary with their account number and IFSC.
- Banks may apply a short waiting period or a lower limit for new beneficiaries; check the screen.
- Choose IMPS, NEFT or RTGS based on the amount and urgency, and complete the authentication steps shown in the app. Exact menus may vary by app version; check in your app.
Step 4: Add a second bank account to UPI

The ₹1 lakh and 20-transaction caps apply per bank account. Linking another bank’s account to your UPI app gives you a separate limit. Choose the account on the payment screen before you enter the PIN.
Example: to send ₹1.5 lakh to a family member for a medical bill on the same day, you could send ₹1 lakh from your HDFC account and ₹50,000 from an account in another bank. Or send the full ₹1.5 lakh by IMPS from HDFC NetBanking.
What does not work
- Moving to PayZapp, Google Pay or PhonePe. The limit belongs to the HDFC account, not the app.
- Asking the branch to “unlock” a higher UPI limit. HDFC’s page says users cannot change it.
- Splitting one big transfer into many small UPI payments. You will hit the 20-transaction count, and the ₹1 lakh cap still applies.
Safety tips
- Never share your UPI PIN or OTP with anyone claiming to be from HDFC.
- Do not install screen-sharing apps on request.
- Check limits only on HDFC Bank’s official website or app.
- Report fraud through HDFC Bank’s “Report UPI Frauds” option on its website and call 1930.
