The HDFC UPI transaction limit for person-to-person (P2P) and person-to-merchant (P2M) payments is ₹1 lakh or 20 transactions, calculated over 24 hours. New UPI users are limited to ₹5,000 in the first 24 hours. HDFC Bank lists higher per-transaction caps of ₹2 lakh for capital market and merchant collect payments, and ₹5 lakh for IPO applications.

HDFC Bank’s UPI page also says users cannot increase or change the UPI limit, because it is set by NPCI. The limit is the same whether you use the HDFC Bank app, PayZapp, Google Pay, PhonePe or any other UPI app with your HDFC account.

This guide explains each HDFC UPI transaction limit with examples, compares HDFC’s figures with NPCI’s 2025 update, and shows what to do when a payment is declined. Other banks and apps are covered in our UPI guides hub.

HDFC UPI transaction limit per day

HDFC Bank applies one combined rule for P2P and P2M: ₹1 lakh or 20 transactions in 24 hours, whichever comes first. So both your transfers to friends and your shop or online payments count toward the same cap. HDFC’s FAQ also notes the daily UPI limit can differ depending on your bank, and that a payment above the cap is simply denied.

The 24 hours are counted on a rolling basis. A payment made at 6 PM today frees up its share of the limit at 6 PM tomorrow.

Example 1: the count runs out before the amount

Meena pays for tea, vegetables, auto rides and groceries by UPI from her HDFC account, 20 payments of about ₹300 each, in one day. She has spent only ₹6,000, so ₹94,000 of the value limit is unused. But her 21st payment is declined, because HDFC counts P2P and P2M together and she has used all 20 transactions. Using UPI Lite for small spends of up to ₹1,000 can help in such cases; how the bank counts Lite payments may vary, so check in your app.

Example 2: the amount runs out first

Arjun pays ₹60,000 for a laptop at a shop’s normal QR at 1 PM, then tries to send ₹50,000 to his father at 7 PM. The transfer is declined, because only ₹40,000 is left of the ₹1 lakh. He can send ₹40,000 now and the rest after 1 PM the next day, or use IMPS or NEFT.

Category limits: HDFC page vs NPCI’s 2025 update

HDFC’s page lists ₹2 lakh per transaction for capital markets and merchant collections, and ₹5 lakh for IPOs. Its FAQ adds that UPI payments involving foreign inward remittances, capital markets, insurance and collections can go up to ₹2 lakh. In September 2025, NPCI raised limits for verified merchants in several categories. Google Pay’s help page now shows these:

CategoryHDFC page (per txn)NPCI verified merchant (per txn / per day)
Capital markets₹2 lakh₹5 lakh / ₹10 lakh
Credit card bills₹2 lakh₹5 lakh / ₹6 lakh
Loan and EMI collections₹2 lakh₹5 lakh / ₹10 lakh
IPO₹5 lakh₹5 lakh / ₹15 lakh

The amount that actually goes through from an HDFC account depends on HDFC’s current setting. If you plan a payment above ₹2 lakh in these categories, confirm with HDFC Bank first. For example, a ₹1.5 lakh SIP top-up to a mutual fund fits within HDFC’s ₹2 lakh figure, but a ₹3 lakh lump sum may not.

Why your HDFC UPI limit may be ₹5,000

HDFC Bank says that, to protect against fraud, new UPI users are restricted to ₹5,000 for the first 24 hours. A similar cooling limit is common at many banks after you re-register on a new phone or reset your UPI PIN; the exact rule may vary by bank/app, so check in your app. The cap lifts on its own after the period ends.

How to send more than ₹1 lakh from HDFC

  1. Use IMPS, NEFT or RTGS through HDFC NetBanking or the HDFC Bank app. RTGS is for ₹2 lakh and above, and RBI sets no minimum or maximum for NEFT.
  2. Pay large bills directly to verified merchants in eligible categories, within HDFC’s category limits.
  3. Split across another bank account, since the UPI cap is per account.

Step-by-step workarounds are in our guide on how to increase UPI limit in HDFC.

Common problems and fixes

  • Payment declined, no charge: HDFC says a payment over the daily cap is simply denied. No fee applies.
  • Declined after 20 small payments: the count limit is reached. Wait for the 24-hour window, or use UPI Lite for small spends.
  • Large mutual fund or card bill payment fails: the amount may be above HDFC’s ₹2 lakh category figure. Pay by NetBanking or split it.
  • Money debited, payment failed: see our UPI transaction failed guide.
  • Suspected fraud: report it to HDFC Bank and call the cybercrime helpline 1930.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming shop payments do not count. At HDFC they count toward the 20.
  • Switching to PayZapp or another app to get a new limit. The limit follows the HDFC account.
  • Relying on NPCI’s ₹5 lakh figure for investments without checking HDFC’s own limit.
  • Sharing your UPI PIN or OTP with anyone who calls offering to raise your limit.
