Is UPI Down? How to Check Server Status (2026)

Is UPI down? A man looks puzzled at his phone after a payment fails

Is UPI down right now, or is the problem only on your phone? Most of the time UPI as a whole is working. What usually fails is one bank’s server, one app, or your own internet or SIM. A full national outage does happen, but it is rare and is usually fixed within an hour or two.

This guide shows you how to tell which part is broken in under five minutes, what to do if money left your account but the payment failed, how to get a refund, and how to keep paying while UPI is down. It applies to every UPI app, including Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM and bank apps.

Is UPI down? Quick answer

Use this table to match what you see with the likely cause. The pattern of failure tells you more than any single error message.

Who this guide is for

  • You tried to pay a shop, a friend or a bill and the app showed “failed”, “pending” or “bank server not reachable”.
  • Your family or friends say their payments are also failing and you want to know if UPI is down for everyone.
  • Money was debited from your account but the receiver says they did not get it.
  • You run a shop and customers cannot pay you by QR code.

Is UPI down right now? 4 ways to check

There is no single public dashboard that shows live UPI health to users. So you need to combine a few signals. Doing all four takes about five minutes.

  1. Check NPCI’s official X account (@NPCI_NPCI). During large outages NPCI usually posts a short note. In April 2025, for example, NPCI publicly said it was facing “intermittent technical issues” and later confirmed that services were restored.
  2. Check your bank’s official X account. Banks post planned maintenance windows in advance. SBI, for example, posts UPI downtime notices on @TheOfficialSBI.
  3. Look at Downdetector. A sudden spike in reports for UPI, a bank or an app is a good hint that the problem is not just you.
  4. Test a second app and a second bank. If Google Pay fails but PhonePe works with the same bank, the app is the problem. If both apps fail for one bank but work for another bank, the bank is the problem.

Example: reading the signals

Say you try to pay ₹450 at a tea stall at 9 PM and Google Pay shows “payment failed”. You open PhonePe with the same bank account and it also fails. Then you switch to your second bank account in PhonePe and the payment goes through. So, is UPI down? No. Your first bank has a problem, most likely maintenance. Check that bank’s X account for a notice and keep using the second account for now.

Now take a different case. Every app fails with every bank, your friends report the same, and Downdetector shows a large spike for UPI across cities. That points to a wider outage. Stop retrying and pay another way for the next hour.

Is UPI down or is it your bank? Why UPI stops working

A UPI payment passes through several systems: your app, the app’s partner bank, NPCI’s switch, your bank and the receiver’s bank. A failure at any one point can stop the payment. This is why the same error can have very different causes.

1. Bank maintenance

This is the most common cause. Banks run maintenance late at night, but sometimes it overruns. On 1 April 2026, SBI said its scheduled maintenance had been extended till 12:30 pm, and UPI, IMPS, YONO and net banking could be disrupted. On 3 October 2026, SBI announced UPI would be unavailable from 00:15 to 01:00 IST. If you bank with SBI, our guide on SBI UPI not working covers these windows in detail.

2. NPCI-level technical issue

Rare, but it affects everyone at once. On 12 April 2025, users across India reported failed payments on all major apps. It was reported as the third disruption in less than two weeks at the time. In such cases every bank and every app is hit, so switching apps does not help.

3. App or phone issues

Old app versions, weak internet, a SIM that is not in the phone, or a changed device can all block UPI. These look like an outage but only affect you. Our guide on UPI not working lists 10 such personal causes with a fix for each.

4. Usage limits

Since 1 August 2025, NPCI limits some background requests. Each UPI app allows up to 50 balance checks per day, and requests to fetch the bank accounts linked to your mobile number are capped at 25 per day. Hitting these limits can make the app look broken even when payments still work.

5. Receiver’s bank is down

Your side can be fine while the receiver’s bank is under maintenance. The payment then fails or stays pending. If the person has a second UPI ID on another bank, ask for it.

Timeline of recent UPI disruptions

If you search “is UPI down” often, you will notice a pattern. These dates come from news reports and bank notices listed in the sources below. They show that bank-level maintenance is far more common than a full outage.

DateWhat happened
12 April 2025NPCI reported intermittent technical issues; failed payments across major apps
1 August 2025New NPCI limits on balance checks (50/day per app) and account list requests (25/day)
1 April 2026SBI maintenance extended till 12:30 pm; UPI, IMPS, YONO, net banking affected
3 October 2026SBI UPI unavailable from 00:15 to 01:00 IST for planned maintenance

What to do when UPI is down

  1. Stop retrying the same payment. Repeated attempts during an outage can create more pending transactions to sort out later.
  2. Check the transaction history in the app before paying again. A payment marked “pending” may still go through.
  3. Switch bank account if you have more than one linked. A bank-level problem will not affect your other bank.
  4. Use UPI Lite for small payments if you loaded it earlier. SBI has itself suggested UPI Lite during its maintenance windows. See how to use UPI Lite.
  5. Keep a backup: some cash, a debit card, or a credit card.

What to do if you are a shopkeeper

When customers say “UPI down hai”, check your own app for incoming payments before handing over goods. Do not accept a screenshot of a “successful” payment as proof. Wait until the credit shows in your app or bank SMS. If many customers are failing, keep a card machine or cash change ready during late-night hours, when bank maintenance is most common.

Money debited but payment failed: how to get it back

This is the main worry during any outage. In most cases the money comes back on its own. Under RBI’s turnaround time rules for failed digital payments, if your account is debited but the receiver is not credited, the amount should be reversed automatically, usually by the next working day (T+1). If the bank misses this deadline, RBI’s framework provides compensation of ₹100 per day of delay.

Example: a ₹2,000 payment during an outage

Suppose you pay ₹2,000 to a friend on a Saturday night while UPI is down. ₹2,000 leaves your account but your friend gets nothing, and the app shows “failed”. Do not send the money again yet. In most cases the ₹2,000 comes back by the next working day. If it has not come back after that, raise a complaint with the transaction ID. If the bank is late beyond the RBI deadline, you are entitled to ₹100 for each day of delay.

If the money does not come back, escalate in this order, as set out in NPCI’s dispute redressal process:

StepWhere to complain
1The UPI app you used (Help or Report option on the transaction)
2The app’s partner (PSP) bank
3Your own bank where the account is held
4NPCI, through its dispute redressal page
5RBI Ombudsman (cms.rbi.org.in)

Keep the UPI transaction ID (UTR) and a screenshot. You will need them at every step. For a full walkthrough, read our guides on UPI transaction failed and UPI refund complaint.

Common mistakes when UPI is down

When people ask “is UPI down?” in a panic, they often make the problem worse. Avoid these:

  • Paying the same person three or four times. When the first payment later succeeds, you now have extra payments to recover.
  • Uninstalling the app. This does not fix a bank or NPCI issue and you will need to register again.
  • Resetting your UPI PIN. A PIN reset will not help during an outage, and the reset may itself fail if the bank is down.
  • Calling numbers from search results. Fake “UPI helpline” numbers are a common trap.
  • Raising a complaint too early. Give the auto-reversal time to work first, then complain with the UTR.

Safety tips during a UPI outage

  • Fraudsters use outages as cover. Nobody from NPCI or your bank will call to “fix” your UPI.
  • Never share your UPI PIN or OTP. You never need a PIN to receive money.
  • Do not install screen-sharing apps on anyone’s request.
  • Search for customer care numbers only on the official bank or app website, not on random search results.
  • If you were cheated, call the cyber crime helpline 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in quickly.

FAQs

How do I know if UPI is down today?

Check NPCI’s and your bank’s official X accounts, look at Downdetector, and try a second app and bank. If everything fails for everyone, UPI is likely down across the network.

How long does a UPI outage last?

There is no fixed time. Planned bank maintenance is often under an hour, for example SBI’s 45-minute window from 00:15 to 01:00 IST on 3 October 2026. Unplanned outages vary. Bank notices usually give a time window.

Will I lose money if UPI fails midway?

Usually not. A failed payment that was debited should be reversed, usually by the next working day. If not, raise a complaint with the transaction ID.

Why does UPI work for my friend but not for me?

Your bank, app or phone is likely the cause, not UPI itself. Try another bank account or app first.

Does UPI Lite work when my bank is down?

Banks such as SBI have recommended UPI Lite during their maintenance, because it uses a balance loaded in advance. Support may vary by bank and app, so test it in your app.

Is UPI down if only the balance check fails?

Not always. Since 1 August 2025 each app allows up to 50 balance checks per day. If you have used them, balance checks fail but payments may still work.

Should I complain to NPCI directly when UPI is down?

Not first. NPCI’s process starts with the app, then the PSP bank and your bank. Go to NPCI only if those steps do not solve your issue.

Conclusion

When you wonder whether UPI is down, find out which link broke: NPCI, your bank, your app or your phone. Do not keep retrying, keep a backup payment method, and use the transaction ID to chase any stuck money. All our UPI help articles are listed on the UPI guides hub.
