To create UPI ID in Google Pay, first link a bank account and set a UPI PIN. Google Pay then gives you a UPI ID automatically. To add more, tap your profile photo, open Bank account, choose the account, tap Manage UPI IDs and tap Add next to the ID you want. You can hold up to four UPI IDs per bank account.
Each extra ID sits on a different bank handle, such as @okaxis, @okhdfcbank, @okicici or @oksbi. Google Pay uses them as backups, so if one partner bank’s server is slow, a payment can go through another. This guide is for anyone setting up Google Pay for the first time, and for existing users who want extra IDs, a cleaner ID or fewer failed payments.

| Name part of the ID | Linked to your Google account email |

Step 1: Set up Google Pay and link your bank

- Install Google Pay and sign in with your Google account.
- Enter the mobile number registered with your bank. Google Pay verifies it by SMS, so keep that SIM in the phone.
- Tap your profile photo and choose Bank account, then add your bank.
- Select the account that Google Pay finds for your number.
- Set your UPI PIN using your debit card, or Aadhaar OTP if your bank supports it. No card? See create UPI ID without debit card.
Your first UPI ID is created at this point and becomes your default.
Step 2: How to create UPI ID in Google Pay (extra IDs)

- Open Google Pay and tap your profile photo at the top right.
- Under payment methods, tap Bank account.
- Select the bank account.
- Tap Manage UPI IDs.
- If fewer than four IDs are listed, tap the down arrow to see all options.
- Tap Add (+) next to the handle you want.
The new ID is active right away. You can share any of them to receive money.
A real example
Ankit signs up with ankit.verma92@gmail.com and links his Canara Bank account. Google Pay creates ankit.verma92@okaxis. He opens Manage UPI IDs and adds ankit.verma92@okicici and ankit.verma92@oksbi. On a busy Diwali evening, one payment to his shop fails on the first ID; he shares the @okicici one and the customer’s ₹1,200 payment goes through. All three IDs credit the same Canara account.
Google Pay UPI handles
| Handle | Partner bank | Example |
|---|---|---|
| @okaxis | Axis Bank | yourname@okaxis |
| @okhdfcbank | HDFC Bank | yourname@okhdfcbank |
| @okicici | ICICI Bank | yourname@okicici |
| @oksbi | State Bank of India | yourname@oksbi |
The handle is only the processing partner. If your account is with Canara Bank and you use @okicici, money still lands in your Canara account.
One UPI ID vs several
| Point | Only 1 ID | 2 to 4 IDs |
|---|---|---|
| If a partner bank server is slow | Payment may fail | Google Pay can route through another server |
| Backup to share | None | Share a second ID if one fails |
| Where money goes | Linked account | Same linked account |
Why your ID shows your email name
Google Pay links your default ID to the email on your Google account. Google’s own example: abc@gmail.com becomes abc@oksbi. If your email is ankit.verma92@gmail.com, your ID may look like ankit.verma92@okaxis. This is already a non-mobile ID, which fits NPCI’s 2026 privacy rules that ask apps to mask mobile numbers and let users default to username-based IDs (compliance deadline 4 September 2026). To get a different name, you would need a different Google account; a custom free-text name may not be available. Google describes changing an ID as deleting the old one and creating a new one.
How to delete a UPI ID in Google Pay
- Profile photo > Bank account > select the account.
- Tap Manage UPI IDs.
- Tap the three dots next to the ID.
- Tap Delete.
To restore a deleted ID later, Google Pay needs the same phone number, device, bank account and Google account. If any of these differ, the same ID cannot be retrieved. More on this in delete UPI ID.
After you create UPI ID in Google Pay: limits
Extra IDs do not raise your limit. All IDs on one account share the same bank limit. For normal person-to-person payments, the NPCI cap is ₹1 lakh per day, and banks can set lower caps. New users or a new device may face a lower limit for the first 24 hours; this may vary by bank and app. So if you set up Google Pay at 10 AM and try to send ₹40,000 at 11 AM, it may be declined that day. See our Google Pay transaction limit guide.
Common problems and fixes

- No Add button: you already have four IDs for that account. Delete one to add another.
- Bank not found: your bank has a different mobile number on record.
- SMS verification failed: choose the correct SIM and make sure it can send SMS.
- ID from PhonePe or BHIM missing: Google Pay cannot import IDs made in other apps. Create new ones here.
- Payment fails on one ID: share another of your IDs as a backup. If several fail, see UPI transaction failed.
- Forgot PIN: follow reset GPay UPI PIN.
What to do if you cannot add an ID
- Count the IDs under Manage UPI IDs. If there are four, delete one first.
- Update Google Pay to the latest version.
- Check that the account is still linked and the PIN is set.
- Try again later; a partner bank may be temporarily unavailable.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Deleting your default ID on a new phone. You may not get the same ID back.
- Expecting extra IDs to raise limits. They are backups, not extra capacity.
- Typing the ID by hand. Copy it to avoid missing dots or digits.
- Signing in with a work Google account you may lose later.
Safety tips

- Entering your UPI PIN always sends money. You never need it to receive money.
- Check the payee name before paying, especially on QR codes.
- Google Pay support will not ask for your PIN or OTP.
- Report fraud on 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in, and in the app.
