The number of UPI transactions per day for sending money to people is usually capped at 20 successful payments in 24 hours for each bank account. On top of the count, there is a value cap of ₹1 lakh in 24 hours. Whichever you hit first stops further person-to-person (P2P) transfers until the window moves on.
Merchant payments are treated differently by different banks. SBI applies the 20-transaction count only to P2P transfers and has no count limit for merchant (P2M) payments. HDFC Bank counts P2P and P2M together. Google Pay also adds a 30-day limit of 150 P2P payments.
This guide explains what counts toward your UPI transactions per day, what does not, how the 24-hour window works with real examples, and how to plan when you have many payments to make. For every other UPI topic, see our UPI guides hub.
UPI transactions per day: quick answer
| Limit | Typical cap | Who sets it |
|---|---|---|
| P2P payments in 24 hours | 20 successful payments | Bank (per NPCI framework) |
| P2P value in 24 hours | ₹1 lakh per bank account | NPCI and bank |
| P2P payments in 30 days (Google Pay) | 150 successful payments | Google Pay |
| Balance checks | 50 per day in each app | NPCI (from 1 Aug 2025) |
| Viewing linked accounts | 25 per day | NPCI (from 1 Aug 2025) |
| Status checks on a pending payment | 3 per day, 90 seconds apart | NPCI (from 1 Aug 2025) |
How many UPI transactions per day are allowed by each bank?

Bank and app pages agree on 20 as the common figure, but they apply it in slightly different ways:
| Bank or app | Count rule | Value rule |
|---|---|---|
| SBI | 20 P2P transactions per 24 hours; no count limit for P2M | ₹1 lakh per day for P2P and P2M |
| HDFC Bank | 20 transactions for P2P and P2M combined | ₹1 lakh, on a 24-hour basis |
| Google Pay | 20 P2P in 24 hours and 150 in 30 days | ₹1 lakh per bank account |
| Paytm | Most banks allow up to 20 a day; may vary by bank | ₹1 lakh per transaction, subject to bank limits |
Only successful payments count. A payment that failed and was not debited does not use up one of your 20. For the amount side of the rules, read our full guide on the maximum limit of UPI.
P2P vs merchant payments: what counts

A P2P payment is money sent to another person’s UPI ID, phone number or bank account. A P2M payment goes to a business, such as a shop QR code, an online store, a bill payment or a mutual fund.
Whether your tea-stall and grocery QR payments count toward 20 depends on your bank:
- SBI account: you could make 20 transfers to friends and still pay at shops, as long as the day’s total stays within ₹1 lakh. Details are in our SBI UPI transaction limit guide.
- HDFC account: 12 shop payments plus 8 transfers to friends already make 20. The 21st payment of any kind is declined until the window moves. See our HDFC UPI transaction limit guide.
If you make many small shop payments in a day, UPI Lite is a good option for amounts up to ₹1,000 without a PIN. How a bank counts Lite payments may vary; check in your app.
The 24-hour window explained with examples

Limits run on a rolling 24 hours, not a calendar day. Two examples make this clear.
Example 1: Ravi hits the count limit
Ravi runs a small tuition centre and refunds advance fees to parents. He sends money to people 20 times between 9 AM and 7 PM on Monday. His 21st transfer at 10 PM is declined. At 9 AM on Tuesday, his first Monday transfer turns 24 hours old and drops out of the window, so one slot opens. More slots open as each Monday payment passes the 24-hour mark.
Example 2: Priya hits the value cap first
Priya pays ₹40,000 to a contractor at 10 AM, ₹30,000 to a supplier at 1 PM and ₹25,000 to her cousin at 5 PM. That is only 3 payments but ₹95,000 in value. At 7 PM she tries to send ₹10,000. It is declined, because only ₹5,000 is left in the ₹1 lakh window. She has used 3 of 20 transactions, but the amount ran out first.
Some banks may reset differently, so if you are unsure, check in your bank app or call the bank.
Other daily UPI limits added in 2025

To reduce load on the UPI system, NPCI capped some background requests from 1 August 2025. These do not move money and do not use up your UPI transactions per day, but you may see an error if you cross them.
- Balance check: 50 times a day per UPI app.
- List linked accounts: 25 times a day.
- Pending payment status: 3 checks a day, with a 90-second gap.
- AutoPay: mandates are processed before 10 am, from 1 pm to 5 pm, and after 9:30 pm.
Practical tip: if a payment shows “pending”, do not keep refreshing. You get only 3 status checks a day. Wait a few minutes, then check once, and keep the UPI reference number handy.
Who is most likely to hit the daily count
- Small traders and freelancers paying many suppliers or helpers from a personal savings account.
- Families splitting bills during a trip or wedding, where many small transfers go out in one evening.
- HDFC account holders who use UPI for every small shop payment, since P2M also counts toward 20.
- New users, who face a ₹5,000 cooling limit in the first 24 hours on Android, which can feel like a count problem.
Common problems and fixes
“Transaction limit exceeded” after only a few payments
You may have hit the value cap, not the count. Ten payments of ₹10,000 each already reach ₹1 lakh. Also, if you set up UPI or reset your PIN in the last 24 hours, a ₹5,000 cooling limit applies.
Limit reached on one app, so switch apps?
Switching from Google Pay to PhonePe with the same bank account will not help. The count and value caps are tied to the bank account. Using a different bank account does work.
Need to make many payouts in one day
- List the payouts and total them before you start.
- Spread transfers across two bank accounts, since each has its own 20 and ₹1 lakh.
- Use NEFT or IMPS through net banking for the rest.
- For a business, ask your bank about a current account or bulk payout options.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Retrying a declined payment again and again. It will not go through until the window moves, and repeated attempts can look suspicious to fraud checks.
- Assuming a calendar day. A payment at 11:55 PM still counts until 11:55 PM the next day.
- Splitting one large transfer into many small ones. You will hit the count limit, and the ₹1 lakh value cap still applies.
- Trusting anyone who offers to “increase” your daily count for a fee or your UPI PIN. Read how to increase UPI limit for what actually works.
FAQs
How many UPI transactions per day can I do?
Most banks allow 20 successful P2P transfers in 24 hours per bank account, within a ₹1 lakh value limit.
Do failed UPI payments count toward the limit?
The limits published by banks and Google Pay count successful payments. A failed payment that was not debited should not count.
Do shop QR payments count in the 20?
It depends on the bank. SBI says there is no count limit for P2M payments, while HDFC Bank counts P2P and P2M together.
Do UPI Lite payments count in the 20?
UPI Lite payments come from a separate on-device balance and are meant for small, frequent spends. How a bank counts them may vary; check in your app.
Is there a limit on receiving money via UPI?
Google Pay says daily limits apply to sending and receiving. Your bank may also have its own rules for the account type, so check with the bank if credits fail.
Can I increase the number of UPI transactions per day?
Not above your bank’s cap. HDFC Bank’s page says users cannot increase UPI limits. Using a second bank account is the practical option.
Does checking my balance count as a transaction?
No. Balance checks have their own cap of 50 a day per app from 1 August 2025, separate from your payment count.
Conclusion
Plan your UPI transactions per day with two numbers in mind: about 20 transfers to people and ₹1 lakh in any 24 hours, per bank account. Merchant payments may or may not count, depending on your bank.
