The Paytm transaction limit for UPI is ₹1 lakh per transaction for most person-to-person and merchant payments, and most banks allow about 20 UPI transactions a day. Paytm itself does not set a separate UPI limit. The real cap comes from NPCI rules and the bank account you link.
Higher limits apply to some payments, like insurance, tax, IPO and hospital bills. UPI Lite on Paytm handles small payments up to ₹1,000 without a PIN. The old Paytm Wallet works differently, and its rules changed after RBI’s action on Paytm Payments Bank in 2024.
This guide explains each Paytm transaction limit with examples, what to do when a payment is declined, and how to stay safe. Other apps and banks are covered in our UPI guides hub.
Paytm transaction limit: quick answer

| Number of UPI payments | About 20 a day (varies by bank) |
| New UPI user | ₹5,000 in first 24 hours (at some banks) |
| Hospitals, education, IPO, tax | Up to ₹5 lakh per payment |
| UPI Lite | ₹1,000 per payment, no PIN |
| Paytm Payments Bank wallet | No new top-ups since 15 March 2024; existing balance can be used |
Paytm transaction limit for UPI payments

Paytm’s support page states that you can transfer up to ₹1,00,000 per transaction using UPI on Paytm, subject to your bank’s limits. It adds that most banks allow up to 20 UPI transactions per day, and that the value and count may differ by bank, risk policy and account type.
Because the limit belongs to your bank account, the same account has the same limit on Paytm, Google Pay, PhonePe or BHIM. Moving to another app does not give you a fresh ₹1 lakh.
Example: one bank account, two apps
You pay ₹70,000 to a contractor on Paytm at 11 AM. At 5 PM you open Google Pay, pick the same bank account and try to send ₹50,000 to a relative. It fails, because only ₹30,000 of the ₹1 lakh is left for that account in the 24-hour window. Choosing a different bank account on the payment screen would work.
Higher limits for special payments

Paytm’s help page lists these higher limits for specific categories:
| Category | Limit on Paytm’s help page |
|---|---|
| Capital markets, insurance, credit card payments | Up to ₹2,00,000 per transaction |
| Hospitals, educational institutions, IPO applications, tax payments | Up to ₹5,00,000 per transaction |
| Select verified merchants | Up to ₹10,00,000 per day |
Since 15 September 2025, NPCI allows up to ₹5 lakh per payment (and up to ₹10 lakh a day in most of these categories) to verified merchants for capital markets, insurance, travel, loan collections, tax, hospitals and education. Credit card bills are ₹5 lakh per payment and ₹6 lakh a day. Jewellery is ₹2 lakh per payment. So Paytm’s ₹2 lakh figure for capital markets, insurance and card bills is lower than NPCI’s ceiling.
The amount you can actually pay depends on whether the merchant is verified and on your bank’s limit. Check the limit shown in the app before you pay. If a ₹3 lakh insurance premium fails, pay it through the insurer’s net banking option or ask your bank about its category limit.
New user and PIN reset limits
Paytm says some banks restrict new UPI users to ₹5,000 in the first 24 hours. The same type of cooling limit applies after a UPI PIN reset at many banks; SBI, for example, caps the first 24 hours at ₹5,000 on Android and ₹5,000 a day for 5 days on iOS. Wait for the period to end before a large payment.
UPI Lite limit on Paytm

UPI Lite lets you pay up to ₹1,000 per transaction without entering a PIN. Under RBI’s December 2024 change, the UPI Lite balance can be up to ₹5,000. Paytm’s help page also mentions a daily usage limit of ₹10,000 for UPI Lite; check the exact figure in your app. For setup, see our UPI Lite guide.
Example: you load ₹2,000 into UPI Lite in the morning. A ₹60 tea, a ₹250 auto ride and a ₹700 grocery bill go through without a PIN. A ₹1,200 medicine bill does not, because it is above ₹1,000 per payment; pay that one by normal UPI with your PIN.
What happened to the Paytm Wallet limit?

The Paytm Wallet was issued by Paytm Payments Bank. In early 2024, RBI barred the bank from accepting new deposits, wallet top-ups or credits after 15 March 2024, except refunds, cashback and interest. Users can keep spending or withdrawing any balance left in the wallet up to that amount.
| Still allowed | Not allowed |
|---|---|
| Spending the existing balance | Adding money (top-ups) |
| Withdrawing the existing balance | New deposits or credits |
| Receiving refunds, cashback and interest | Loading money from a bank account or card |
Because of this, Paytm users now pay mostly through UPI linked to a bank account. Paytm moved UPI handles to partner banks, so your UPI ID may now end with a bank-specific handle. If you still hold wallet balance, check it in the app.
Who these limits affect most
- Shopkeepers paying suppliers from a personal account, who can run into the 20-a-day count.
- Investors paying mutual funds or brokers above ₹2 lakh, where the bank or app may apply a lower category limit.
- Old Paytm Wallet users who still have balance and wonder why top-ups fail.
- New users who just switched phones and see the ₹5,000 cap.
Common problems and fixes
- “Exceeded limit” error: you crossed ₹1 lakh or the bank’s count in 24 hours. Wait, pay less, or switch the bank account on the payment screen.
- Only ₹5,000 allowed: you recently set up UPI or reset your PIN. Wait for the cooling period.
- Large payment fails at a merchant: the merchant may not be verified, or your bank’s cap is lower.
- UPI Lite payment fails: the amount is above ₹1,000 or the Lite balance is too low. Top up, or pay by normal UPI.
- Money debited, payment failed: keep the UTR number and read UPI transaction failed.
Safety tips for Paytm users
- Never share your UPI PIN or OTP, including with callers claiming to be from Paytm or your bank.
- You do not need a PIN to receive money. A “collect request” that asks for your PIN is a payment out of your account.
- Raise complaints only through Paytm’s in-app help or official grievance page.
- Report fraud to the cybercrime helpline 1930.

Conclusion
Your Paytm transaction limit is really your bank’s UPI limit: ₹1 lakh and about 20 payments a day for normal use, more for verified merchants, and ₹1,000 per UPI Lite payment. Treat any leftover Paytm Wallet balance as a separate pot that can be spent but not topped up. For the full NPCI table, see the maximum limit of UPI guide or browse all UPI guides.
