Create UPI ID in Paytm: Steps and Handle Options (2026)

Person holding a smartphone, ready to create UPI ID in Paytm by linking a bank account

To create UPI ID in Paytm, you link your bank account inside the app and set a UPI PIN. Paytm then generates the UPI ID for you automatically. You do not type an ID from scratch; you pick from the handles Paytm offers, such as @ptaxis, @pthdfc, @ptsbi or @ptyes.

The whole process takes a few minutes if your SIM is in the phone and your bank has the same mobile number on record. This guide covers the exact steps, what each handle means, how to switch your primary ID, how to remove an ID, and what to do when setup fails. It applies to anyone with a savings or current account at a bank that supports UPI, whether you are a first-time user or moving from the old @paytm handle.

Before you start

  • The SIM with your bank-registered mobile number must be in the phone you are using. Paytm sends a verification SMS from that SIM.
  • Keep your debit card handy for setting the UPI PIN. If you do not have one, check whether the Aadhaar option appears for your bank; our guide to create UPI ID without debit card explains that route.
  • Update the Paytm app from the Play Store or App Store so menu names match the steps below.
  • Have a stable mobile data or Wi-Fi connection. A dropped connection during PIN setup is a common reason for a half-finished setup.

How to create UPI ID in Paytm: step by step

  1. Open Paytm and tap your profile icon at the top left.
  2. Go to UPI & Payment Settings.
  3. Tap Add Bank Account (some versions say Link Bank Account).
  4. Select your bank from the list.
  5. Allow Paytm to send a verification SMS from your bank-registered number.
  6. Paytm fetches your account. Select it.
  7. Set your UPI PIN using the last 6 digits and expiry of your debit card, then the OTP from your bank.

Once the account is linked, your UPI ID appears in the UPI ID section of UPI & Payment Settings. You can copy it from there and share it with anyone who wants to pay you.

A quick example

Neha has an SBI savings account and a Jio SIM that SBI has on record. She opens Paytm, goes to UPI & Payment Settings, picks State Bank of India, lets Paytm send the SMS, selects her account and sets a 6-digit PIN with her debit card. Paytm shows an ID such as neha.gupta@ptsbi or a number-based ID on another handle. She can keep it, or pick a different handle as primary. Her friend Rohan tries the same thing with a second SIM in the phone, but his bank has the number on SIM 2 while Paytm sends the SMS from SIM 1. Switching the SMS SIM fixes it.

Paytm UPI handles explained

The part after @ is called the handle. It shows which bank processes UPI for Paytm. In 2024 Paytm moved users off the old @paytm handle to handles run with partner banks.

@pthdfcHDFC Bankname@pthdfc

The handle does not have to match your own bank. An SBI account holder can use @ptaxis and still receive money into the SBI account. If someone pays ₹2,500 to your @ptyes ID, the ₹2,500 is credited to whichever bank account that ID is linked to, not to Yes Bank.

How to change or set a primary UPI ID in Paytm

Your primary ID is the default one used to receive money. To switch it:

  1. Open profile icon > UPI & Payment Settings.
  2. Tap the UPI ID section to see all your IDs.
  3. Tap the three dots next to the ID you want.
  4. Choose Set as Primary and confirm.

You can also use Change Primary UPI ID, pick a handle from the list and tap Proceed. Paytm does not let you type a completely free-form ID; you choose from what the app offers.

Why a username-based ID matters in 2026

NPCI circular OC-234/2026-27 (June 2026) told UPI apps to mask mobile numbers and UPI IDs on customer screens by 4 September 2026, and to let users create and set non-mobile UPI IDs as default. If your Paytm ID is your phone number, switching your primary to a name-based ID keeps your number private when you share the ID. Whether Paytm offers a personalised name for each handle may vary; check the options in your app.

How to remove a UPI ID

Removing the linked bank account also deactivates its UPI ID. Go to UPI & Payment Settings, open the bank account and tap Remove. Money already received is not affected. For app-by-app steps, see how to delete a UPI ID.

After you create UPI ID in Paytm: limits and first payments

For normal person-to-person UPI payments, the NPCI cap is ₹1 lakh per day, and your bank can set a lower cap or a count limit. New users or a new device may face a lower limit in the first 24 hours; the exact figure may vary by bank and app, so check in your app. For example, if you finish setup at 10 AM and try to pay ₹40,000 rent at 11 AM, the payment may be declined on day one even though it is under ₹1 lakh. Send a small amount first. Our Paytm transaction limit guide covers the numbers in detail.

Common problems and fixes

Most setup failures come from a SIM or number mismatch. Photo: sayan Nath / Unsplash
  • SMS verification stuck: make sure the right SIM is selected on dual-SIM phones and that the SIM can send SMS.
  • No account found: your bank has a different mobile number. Update it with the bank first.
  • Wrong card details: enter the last 6 digits of the debit card linked to that same account, not a credit card.
  • OTP not received: wait a minute and retry. Check that the bank’s SMS is not blocked.
  • Old @paytm ID not working: older IDs were migrated in 2024. Share your current ID from the UPI ID section instead.
  • Forgot the PIN you just set: reset it with your card or Aadhaar OTP; see forgot UPI PIN.

What to do if setup keeps failing

  1. Check with your bank which mobile number is on the account.
  2. Put that SIM in slot 1 or select it for SMS, and restart the phone.
  3. Update Paytm and clear the app cache.
  4. Try again after 30 minutes if you made several attempts; repeated tries can trigger a temporary block.
  5. Raise a ticket in Paytm Help with a screenshot of the error.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Typing an old @paytm ID on forms. Always copy the current one from the app.
  • Sharing a mobile-number ID publicly, such as on a shop board, when a name-based ID is available.
  • Linking a family member’s account on your phone. UPI is tied to the account holder’s number and device.
  • Removing a bank account without first telling people who pay you regularly.

Safety tips

  • You never enter your UPI PIN to receive money. A request asking for your PIN is a payment, not a credit.
  • Only use the official Paytm app. Avoid links sent by strangers.
  • Check the name shown before you approve any payment.
  • Do not share OTPs or install screen-sharing apps at a caller’s request.
  • If money is taken, call 1930 or file at cybercrime.gov.in; see our UPI fraud complaint guide.
