PhonePe Wallet Limit: Minimum KYC vs Full KYC (2026)

The PhonePe wallet limit depends on your KYC level. A minimum KYC wallet can hold up to ₹10,000 at any time, with loading capped at ₹10,000 a month and ₹1,20,000 a financial year. A full KYC wallet can hold up to ₹2 lakh, as allowed under RBI’s rules for prepaid payment instruments (PPIs).

The wallet is separate from UPI. When you pay through UPI on PhonePe, money comes from your bank account and the ₹1 lakh-a-day UPI rules apply. Wallet limits apply only to the money you load into the PhonePe Wallet itself.

This guide explains every PhonePe wallet limit from PhonePe’s wallet terms, with worked examples, the difference between wallet and UPI, common problems and safety tips. For all other UPI topics, see our UPI guides hub.

A minimum KYC wallet is what you get after basic sign-up with your mobile number and simple details. PhonePe’s terms set these rules:

  • Loading limit of ₹10,000 per month and ₹1,20,000 per financial year.
  • Balance capped at ₹10,000 at any time. A refund on a cancelled order can push it above this.
  • You cannot send the balance to another PhonePe wallet user.
  • You cannot withdraw it to a bank account or credit card, except in conditions set by the regulator.

In practice, a minimum KYC wallet is for spending at merchants, recharges and bill payments.

Example: how the ₹10,000 monthly load works

Sunita has a minimum KYC wallet. She loads ₹6,000 on the 2nd of the month and ₹4,000 on the 10th. Her loads for the month now total ₹10,000. On the 15th she has spent ₹3,000 and tries to load ₹2,000 more. The load is blocked, because the monthly load limit is used up, even though her balance is only ₹7,000. On the 1st of the next month, the monthly load limit resets.

The yearly cap also matters: loading ₹10,000 every month for 12 months adds up to exactly ₹1,20,000, the financial-year limit.

Full KYC PhonePe wallet limits

Under RBI’s Master Direction on PPIs, the amount outstanding in a full KYC wallet cannot exceed ₹2 lakh at any point. PhonePe’s terms list these default limits:

Full KYC limitPer transactionPer day / per monthPer financial year
Transfer to own bank account₹5,000₹25,000₹3,00,000
Purchases₹1,00,000₹1,00,000₹2,00,000

These may vary by wallet type and PhonePe’s risk checks, so confirm the limits shown in your app. Withdrawals go only to the bank account linked to the app; cash withdrawal is not allowed.

Example: moving ₹12,000 back to the bank

Rahul has ₹12,000 in a full KYC wallet and wants it in his bank account. With a ₹5,000 per-transaction cap, he needs three transfers: ₹5,000, ₹5,000 and ₹2,000. All three fit within the ₹25,000 daily limit, so he can finish in one day. If he had ₹40,000 to move, he would hit ₹25,000 on the first day, and the per-month cap is also listed as ₹25,000, so the rest may have to wait for the next month. Check the limits shown in your app before planning a large withdrawal.

How to check your wallet balance and KYC status

  1. Open the PhonePe app and sign in.
  2. Find the PhonePe Wallet section from the home screen or your profile. The layout can change between app versions.
  3. Your balance and KYC status show on the wallet screen.
  4. If full KYC is not done, the app shows an option to complete it. Follow the in-app steps; requirements are set by RBI and PhonePe.

Who should use the PhonePe wallet

  • Good fit: people who want a fixed monthly budget for recharges, bills and small online orders, kept apart from the main bank balance.
  • Good fit with full KYC: users who receive refunds or cashback in the wallet and want to move it back to the bank.
  • Not a good fit: anyone planning to park large sums. A minimum KYC balance cannot go back to the bank, and full KYC withdrawals are capped.

Common problems and fixes

  • Cannot add money: you may have hit the ₹10,000 monthly load or balance cap. Spend some balance or wait for the next month.
  • Cannot withdraw to bank: minimum KYC wallets do not allow it. Complete full KYC.
  • Withdrawal stopped partway: you reached ₹5,000 per transaction or ₹25,000 for the day. Try again within the limits.
  • Wallet payment on hold after loading: PhonePe says it may apply a cooling period after fresh loading.
  • Need to pay more than the wallet allows: pay through UPI from your bank account instead.

Common mistakes and safety tips

  • Do not load more into a minimum KYC wallet than you plan to spend, because you cannot move it back to the bank.
  • Complete KYC only inside the official PhonePe app. Ignore links sent by SMS or WhatsApp asking you to “update KYC”.
  • Never share your UPI PIN, OTP or wallet details with callers.
  • Report fraud to PhonePe from the app and call the cybercrime helpline 1930.
