Airtel UPI: person holding a bundle of rupee notes, the kind of money you can now send through the Airtel Thanks app

Airtel UPI is the UPI payment service from Airtel Payments Bank, used through the Airtel Thanks app. You can create a UPI ID, link an account from any UPI-enabled bank, and send money, scan QR codes, recharge and pay bills at no charge.

You do not need an Airtel Payments Bank account to use it. Any bank that works with BHIM UPI can be linked. If you do have an Airtel Payments Bank account, it can be used on UPI with a limit of 20 transactions or ₹1 lakh in 24 hours, whichever comes first.

This guide covers setup, features, the limits that apply in different cases with worked examples, how Airtel UPI compares with other apps, fixes for common errors and what to do if a payment fails. For every other UPI topic, visit our UPI guides hub.

How to create an Airtel UPI ID

  1. Download the Airtel Thanks app from Google Play or the App Store.
  2. Sign up with your mobile number. Use the SIM that has the number registered with your bank.
  3. Open the UPI section and create your UPI ID. The app shows the handle it assigns.
  4. Select your bank and link the account found against your mobile number.
  5. Set a UPI PIN with your debit card details, or with Aadhaar OTP if your bank allows it.
  6. Start sending and receiving money, paying bills or recharging.

Menu names in the app change over time. If a step looks different, look for “UPI” or “BHIM UPI” on the home screen. If you have no working debit card, our Aadhaar UPI bank list guide explains the Aadhaar OTP route and who can use it.

Checklist before you start

  • The SIM with your bank-registered mobile number is in the phone and can send SMS.
  • You have your debit card, or your bank supports Aadhaar OTP and your Aadhaar uses the same mobile number.
  • The Airtel Thanks app is downloaded from the official store.
  • You have decided which bank account you want as the default for receiving money.

SituationLimit
Airtel Payments Bank account on UPI20 transactions or ₹1 lakh in 24 hours, whichever first
Person-to-person (NPCI cap)₹1 lakh per day
First 24 hours as a new UPI userOften ₹5,000; may vary by bank
Verified merchants in insurance, capital markets, travel, loan EMIsUp to ₹5 lakh per transaction, ₹10 lakh per day

If you link another bank’s account, that bank’s own limit applies. Banks can set lower limits than NPCI allows. Our maximum UPI limit guide lists the current NPCI caps by category.

Worked examples

  • Amount runs out first: from your Airtel Payments Bank account you pay ₹40,000 at 10 AM and ₹55,000 at 3 PM. You have used ₹95,000. A ₹10,000 payment at 8 PM fails, because it would take you past ₹1 lakh in 24 hours. A payment of up to ₹5,000 would still go through.
  • Count runs out first: you run a small shop and use the same account to pay suppliers ₹500 each. After 20 payments in 24 hours you are blocked, even though you have spent only ₹10,000.
  • Linked SBI account: the 20-transaction rule above is for Airtel Payments Bank accounts. With an SBI account linked in Airtel Thanks, SBI’s own limits apply.

Airtel Payments Bank and UPI: what to know

Airtel Payments Bank is an RBI-licensed payments bank. It added UPI in 2017. As a payments bank it can take deposits but cannot give loans or issue credit cards. Its savings account works with UPI like any bank account, subject to the limits above. When you reach your UPI limit, Airtel Payments Bank also offers its own wallet and account features in the app as an alternative.

Airtel UPI vs other UPI apps

The money moves the same way in every UPI app. Airtel UPI makes most sense if you already use Airtel Thanks for prepaid recharges, postpaid bills or broadband, because payments sit next to those services. If you mostly pay at shops and want the widest merchant offers, another app may suit you better. You can use more than one; each app gives its own UPI ID for the same bank account. Telecom-linked alternatives are covered in what is Jio UPI.

Common problems and fixes

  • “No account found”: your bank does not have this mobile number on record. Update it at the branch or through net banking.
  • Limit exceeded: you hit 20 transactions or ₹1 lakh in 24 hours. Wait for the window to reset.
  • Wrong PIN attempts: too many wrong attempts can block UPI debits for a period. Reset the PIN with your debit card.
  • SMS verification stuck: pick the correct SIM slot and make sure the SIM can send SMS.
  • Amount debited, payment failed: wait for the auto-refund. If it does not arrive, raise a complaint in the app with the UPI reference number.

What to do if an Airtel UPI payment fails

RBI has fixed timelines for failed UPI payments that apply to every bank, including Airtel Payments Bank:

SituationTimelineIf it is late
Sent to a person, debited, not creditedAuto-reversal by T+1 day₹100 per day beyond T+1
Paid a merchant, debited, not confirmedAuto-reversal within T+5 days₹100 per day beyond T+5
  1. Copy the UPI reference number from the transaction screen.
  2. Raise a complaint in Airtel Thanks and with the bank whose account was debited.
  3. If there is no reply within 30 days, or the reply does not solve it, complain to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in or call 14448. Under the 2026 scheme this must be done within 90 days.
