Does PayPal accept UPI? Partly, and only for specific use. In July 2025, PayPal and NPCI International announced that UPI would join PayPal World, a platform linking major digital wallets, so Indian users could pay international merchants that accept PayPal using their UPI app. How widely this is live for you depends on the merchant and your app, so check the checkout page.
What PayPal does not do is let you add money to a PayPal balance with UPI or withdraw PayPal earnings to a UPI ID. Indian freelancers and sellers still receive PayPal payments into a linked Indian bank account. This guide explains each use case, with examples, alternatives, common mistakes and safety tips.
Does PayPal accept UPI? Quick answer
| Use case | UPI supported? |
|---|---|
| Paying a foreign merchant through PayPal World with UPI | Announced July 2025; availability depends on merchant and app |
| Paying an Indian merchant through PayPal | No. PayPal stopped domestic payments in India in 2021 |
| Loading money into PayPal with UPI | No |
| Withdrawing PayPal earnings to UPI | No; withdrawals go to a linked bank account |
| Sending money to friends via PayPal using UPI | No |
What is PayPal World?
PayPal World is a platform announced by PayPal on 23 July 2025 to connect large payment systems and wallets. The launch partners named were PayPal and Venmo, India’s UPI (through NPCI International), China’s Tenpay Global (Weixin Pay) and Mercado Pago in Latin America. The goal is that a user of one system can pay merchants on another without opening a new account. Reports at the time said UPI support was expected by the end of 2025.
For Indians, the idea is simple: shop on a foreign website that accepts PayPal, choose to pay with UPI, and approve the payment in your UPI app in rupees.
Does PayPal accept UPI at checkout: how it is meant to work
- On a foreign shopping site, choose PayPal at checkout.
- Pick the UPI option if it is shown for your region.
- Approve the request in your UPI app with your UPI PIN.
- The amount is debited in rupees from your bank account, with the exchange rate shown.

If you do not see a UPI option, the feature is not available for that merchant or your account yet. Exact steps may vary by app and merchant; follow what the checkout shows.
Example: you order a book from a US website that accepts PayPal. At checkout, if a UPI option appears, you approve the request in your UPI app and see the rupee amount, including the conversion, before entering your PIN. If no UPI option appears, you pay with an international debit or credit card instead.
How Indian freelancers receive PayPal money
If you earn from foreign clients through PayPal, the money is converted to rupees and sent to the Indian bank account linked to your PayPal account. You cannot withdraw it to a UPI ID. Once it reaches your bank, you can of course use UPI from that account.
- Link and verify an Indian bank account in PayPal.
- Provide a purpose code for incoming payments as asked by PayPal.
- Check PayPal’s fee and conversion rate on each payment.

Example: a graphic designer in Patna is paid by a client abroad through PayPal. The amount is converted to rupees and lands in her linked bank account. From there, she pays rent and bills using UPI as usual. At no point does the PayPal money move to her UPI ID directly.
Why you cannot use PayPal for Indian shopping
PayPal stopped domestic payment services in India from April 2021 and focuses on cross-border payments. So an Indian website will not offer PayPal, and you cannot use PayPal to pay an Indian shop with UPI. For Indian shopping, use UPI directly from your app.
Charges to watch
- Conversion rate: cross-border payments involve a currency conversion. Compare the rupee amount shown with the market rate.
- PayPal fees: receiving payments as a freelancer carries PayPal fees; check PayPal’s fee page for your account type.
- Bank charges: your bank may apply its own charges on foreign transactions. This may vary by bank/app; check in your app.

Alternatives if UPI is not available on PayPal
| Need | Option |
|---|---|
| Pay a foreign website | International debit or credit card |
| Pay shops abroad on travel | UPI International in partner countries |
| Send money to family abroad | Bank remittance or licensed transfer services |
| Receive money from foreign clients | PayPal to bank, or other cross-border payment services |

Common mistakes to avoid
- Believing “PayPal to UPI” withdrawal apps. PayPal pays out only to a linked bank account.
- Approving a UPI request you did not start. Only approve requests for purchases you made.
- Ignoring the conversion rate. Read the rupee amount before entering your PIN.
- Linking a bank account in someone else’s name. Use your own verified account.
Safety tips
- Approve UPI requests only for purchases you started yourself.
- Ignore messages saying “pay via UPI to receive your PayPal money”. Receiving money never needs your PIN.
- Use only the official PayPal website or app.
- Read our guide on whether it is safe to share your UPI ID.
What to do if something goes wrong
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| No UPI option at PayPal checkout | Use an international card; the feature may not be live for that merchant |
| UPI debited but order not confirmed | Check the merchant and PayPal order status, then raise a complaint from the UPI transaction screen |
| Fake “PayPal” UPI request received | Decline it and report it; see our UPI fraud complaint guide |
| PayPal withdrawal not reaching bank | Check bank details and purpose code in PayPal, then contact PayPal support |
