To cancel UPI mandate (UPI AutoPay), open the app where you set it up, find the AutoPay or automatic payments section, select the mandate and tap cancel. You confirm with your UPI PIN. Once cancelled, no future debits will happen under that mandate.
NPCI has also built a central option, UPI Help, to see mandates across apps in one place. Below are the steps for Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm, when to pause instead of cancel, the AutoPay rules that matter, and what to do when cancellation fails.
Cancel UPI mandate: quick answer
| App | Path |
|---|---|
| Google Pay | Profile icon, Autopay, Live tab, select mandate, Cancel autopay, enter UPI PIN |
| PhonePe | Profile, Payment Management, Autopay, select mandate, Pause or Delete |
| Paytm | Profile, UPI and payment settings, Automatic Payments, select mandate, Cancel Automatic Payment |
| Any app (central) | NPCI’s UPI Help portal at upihelp.npci.org.in, where available |
Menu labels change with app updates. If you do not see these names, look for “AutoPay” or “Mandates” in your profile or settings.
Who this guide is for
- You set up a subscription (OTT, music, cloud storage, newspaper) with UPI AutoPay and no longer use it.
- A mutual fund SIP, insurance premium or bill payment runs on AutoPay and you want to stop or pause it.
- You see a debit you do not recognise and suspect an old mandate.
- You are about to delete a UPI ID or close a bank account and want to clear mandates first.
How to cancel UPI mandate in Google Pay
- Open Google Pay and tap your profile icon at the top right.
- Tap “Autopay”.
- In the “Live” tab, tap the mandate you want to stop.
- Tap “Cancel autopay” (or “Pause autopay” to stop it for a set period).
- Enter your UPI PIN.
- Check that the status has changed in the Live tab.
Google Pay groups mandates into three tabs: Live (approved but not yet executed), Pending (needing your action) and Completed (executed, expired or revoked). Tap a mandate to see its autopay number, start and end dates, frequency and debit details.
Google Pay says loan mandates cannot be cancelled in the app. Contact the lender for those. Cancellation may also fail if the linked bank account is inactive; reactivate the account first. If the Autopay section is missing, update Google Pay from the Play Store.
How to cancel UPI mandate in PhonePe
- Open PhonePe and tap your profile.
- Go to “Payment Management” and then “Autopay”.
- Select the mandate.
- Choose “Pause” to hold it, or “Delete” to remove it.
- Confirm with your UPI PIN if asked.
How to cancel UPI mandate in Paytm
- Open Paytm and tap the profile icon at the top left.
- Open “UPI and payment settings”.
- Under UPI settings, tap “Automatic Payments”.
- Select the service and tap “Cancel Automatic Payment”.
- Confirm with your UPI PIN if asked.

Example: three forgotten subscriptions
Say you have three monthly mandates you barely use: ₹149, ₹199 and ₹299. Together that is ₹647 a month, or ₹7,764 a year. Opening the AutoPay list once and cancelling them takes a few minutes and stops all three debits from the next cycle.
Do not remember which app has the mandate? Use UPI Help
NPCI launched UPI Help (upihelp.npci.org.in) for central mandate management. News reports say you log in with your bank-linked mobile number and an OTP, then can view your AutoPay mandates with amount, frequency and merchant, and pause or cancel them. NPCI asked ecosystem participants to align with this framework by 31 December 2025, so mandates should also become visible and manageable from any UPI app. Rollout and features may vary; check the portal and your app.

Pause vs cancel: which to choose
| Option | Use it when | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Pause | You want to skip a few months | Debits stop for the chosen period, then resume |
| Cancel | You no longer want the service | Mandate ends; a new one is needed to restart |
In Google Pay, pausing lets you set a start and end date. Pause suits a SIP you want to skip for a short time; cancel suits a service you have stopped using.

Useful AutoPay rules to know
- Google Pay says mandates under ₹15,000 need your PIN only the first time; above ₹15,000 you approve each debit with the PIN. For insurance, mutual funds and credit card bills, the PIN is needed for debits above ₹1,00,000.
- Google Pay supports AutoPay through IDs ending in @okaxis, @okhdfcbank and @okicici.
- New AutoPay requests can take up to 24 hours to appear in Google Pay.
- Since 1 August 2025, NPCI has asked that AutoPay debits run outside peak hours (10 am to 1 pm and 5 pm to 9:30 pm).
- Cancelling the mandate does not cancel your subscription contract with the merchant. Cancel the plan with the merchant too, if needed.

Special cases: EMI, SIP and insurance
- Loan EMI: Google Pay does not allow cancelling loan mandates in the app. Talk to the lender first; missing an EMI can lead to penalties.
- Mutual fund SIP: stopping the UPI mandate stops the debit, but the SIP may still be registered with the fund house. Stop or pause it on the platform where you started it too.
- Insurance premium: a missed premium can affect your cover. Check the grace period with the insurer before cancelling.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Mandate not visible in app | It may be in another app; check UPI Help or other apps |
| Cancel option missing (loan EMI) | Contact the lender; loan mandates often cannot be cancelled in-app |
| Cancellation fails | Check the bank account is active; update app; try again |
| Autopay section missing in Google Pay | Update the app from the Play Store |
| Money debited after cancelling | Raise a dispute in the app with the transaction ID, then with your bank |
To raise a dispute in Google Pay, open the mandate in the Live tab, tap the menu at the top right, choose Get help, pick the issue category and create a ticket. For other apps, use the help option on the transaction. Our UPI refund complaint guide explains the next steps if the app does not resolve it.
Common mistakes when you cancel UPI mandate
- Deleting the UPI ID instead of cancelling. Mandates may fail messily. Cancel them properly first.
- Cancelling a loan EMI mandate without telling the lender. This can lead to penalties.
- Forgetting the merchant side. The service may still bill you another way.
- Approving AutoPay requests you did not start. Decline any request you do not recognise; declining does not need a PIN.
What to do if you see a mandate you do not recognise
- Open the mandate and note the merchant name, amount, frequency and start date.
- Check your email and SMS for a sign-up confirmation from that merchant. Many mandates come from free trials that turned into paid plans.
- If you did not set it up, cancel UPI mandate entries like this at once, so no further debit happens.
- Raise a dispute in the app for any amount already debited, with the transaction ID.
- If you think someone used your phone or details without permission, change your UPI PIN and report on 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in.
A simple routine to keep AutoPay under control
- Every three months: open the AutoPay section in each UPI app you use and review the Live list.
- Before a free trial ends: decide whether you want the paid plan, and cancel the mandate if not.
- When you change banks: move SIPs and premiums to the new account before closing the old one.
- When an amount changes: check whether the new amount crosses a level that needs your PIN for each debit, such as ₹15,000 in Google Pay.
- Keep one place for records: a note listing each mandate, its amount and the app it sits in makes cancelling quick later.
Example: switching a SIP to a new bank
You run a ₹2,000 monthly SIP by UPI AutoPay from an old savings account you plan to close. Set up a new mandate from the new account on the investment platform first, wait until the first debit works, and only then cancel the old mandate. This avoids a missed instalment in between.
FAQs
Is there a charge to cancel a UPI mandate?
Apps do not charge for cancelling. The merchant may have its own terms for ending a plan.
Can I cancel a UPI mandate from a different app?
Under NPCI’s newer framework, mandates are meant to be manageable from any UPI app or UPI Help. If your app does not show it, use the original app.
Will cancelling stop my SIP or EMI?
The UPI debit will stop. Missing an EMI can lead to penalties, so talk to the lender first.
Does deleting my UPI ID cancel mandates?
It may cause them to fail, but it is better to cancel them properly first. See delete UPI ID.
How long does it take to cancel UPI mandate?
The cancellation itself takes a minute in the app once you enter your PIN. Check the status afterwards to confirm it changed.
Can I restart a cancelled mandate?
No. A cancelled mandate ends. To restart, set up a new mandate with the merchant.
Conclusion
Review your AutoPay list every few months and cancel UPI mandate entries you no longer use. It takes a minute and stops small leaks from your account. If UPI itself is failing, read UPI not working, and find more help on the UPI guides hub.
