How to Read the Weekly FII DII Report Numbers: A Worked Example

Headline FII buying tells you who bought, not how much fresh institutional money arrived. Three steps help.

  1. Combine the flows. ₹45,960 crore of FII buying minus ₹24,197 crore of DII selling leaves a combined institutional inflow of about ₹21,764 crore.
  2. Find the DII share. ₹24,197 divided by ₹45,960 is 52.6%. By day, it ran from 12.6% on Monday to 69.7% on Thursday, then eased to 43.4% on Friday.
  3. Compare with last week. In the week ending 30 October, FIIs bought a net ₹6,305 crore and DIIs bought ₹3,110 crore, and the Nifty rose about 2.0%. This week’s FII buying was about 7.3 times larger. See last week’s report for that data.

What Drove the Week: Crude, Rupee, Yields and AI Stocks

Crude oil had its biggest weekly fall since 2020

Brent crude retreated nearly 18% from its 30 October high of $117.64 a barrel, and the January 2027 contract ended at $96.84 on Friday, 6 November, Business Standard reported. Brent fell 8.7% on Wednesday alone, to $94.62, after the Democrats’ wins in the US midterm elections raised hopes of an earlier end to the US-Iran conflict, according to Angel One.

The rupee and bond yields in this weekly FII DII report

The rupee rose for a sixth straight session to close at 93.91 per dollar on Friday, its strongest close since 22 April 2026. India’s 10-year government bond yield fell 23 basis points over the week, its steepest weekly drop since 2019, before ending Friday at 7.19%. In the US, the 10-year Treasury yield slipped to 4.90% on Wednesday from 4.95% on Tuesday, well below its 5.31% high of 5 October.

A global sell-off in AI stocks

A sharp sell-off in artificial intelligence stocks pushed some global money away from AI-heavy markets such as Taiwan and South Korea. India’s lower AI exposure drew buyers, along with improving corporate earnings. The rally was narrow, though. On Friday, 2,400 shares fell and only 1,681 rose, and the Nifty Smallcap 250 slipped 0.85%.

Keep the bigger picture in mind. NSDL data cited by Angel One shows FPIs were still net sellers of ₹2,72,452 crore in 2026 up to 5 November, though November had net inflows of ₹22,693 crore by then. Our FII DII records page tracks the largest flows. Do FIIs believe the move?

What F&O Data Says About FII Positioning

FIIs held a net short of 1,85,979 index futures contracts on 4 November. That fell to 1,37,438 on 5 November and to 1,00,416 on 6 November, a cut of 37,022 contracts on Friday, as per NSE participant data shown by Quantsapp. In index options, FIIs were about 3.22 lakh contracts net long on Friday.

Business Standard noted that Nifty futures rose 8.4% over the week while open interest, the number of outstanding contracts, fell 17.6%. Rising prices with falling open interest usually signals short covering, which means traders who bet on a fall were closing those bets.

FIIs are still net short, so this is hedged optimism rather than an outright bullish bet. For a closer look at the record days, read our analysis of the FII weekly buying record. The holiday-shortened week ahead has several dates that can move flows.

Key Dates and a Checklist for Next Week

  • Sunday, 8 November: Diwali Muhurat trading, 2:20 PM to 3:30 PM, with pre-open from 2:05 PM. Volumes are usually small.
  • Monday, 9 November: Nifty weekly expiry, moved from Tuesday.
  • Tuesday, 10 November: Market holiday for Diwali Balipratipada. No FII DII data.
  • Wednesday, 11 November: MSCI November 2026 Index Review announcement. Changes take effect on 1 December, so passive funds usually trade at the close on 30 November.

All dates are from our FII DII calendar. Use this checklist each evening:

  1. Check whether FII buying extends past six sessions, and confirm with NSDL final data.
  2. Watch the DII share. If DII selling stays above 60% of FII buying, the rally needs more foreign money.
  3. Track the FII index futures net short. Further cuts show rising conviction; new shorts warn of a pause.
  4. Follow Brent and the rupee. Brent back above $100 or a weaker rupee could slow inflows.

Avoid treating one record week as a new trend. Monthly totals on our FII DII monthly data page give a steadier view.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the weekly FII DII report show for the week ending 6 November 2026?

FIIs bought a net ₹45,960.02 crore and DIIs sold a net ₹24,196.52 crore in the cash market from 2 to 6 November 2026, based on NSE provisional data. The Nifty 50 rose 8.58% to 25,030.35.

Why did FIIs buy Indian stocks this week?

Reports cited a fall of nearly 18% in Brent crude from its 30 October high, a stronger rupee, lower US Treasury yields, a global sell-off in AI-linked stocks and improving corporate earnings.

Why were DIIs selling while FIIs were buying?

No official reason is published. Domestic funds appear to have booked profits into heavy foreign demand. Their selling equalled about 53% of FII buying.

Is the stock market open on 10 November 2026?

No. NSE and BSE are closed on Tuesday, 10 November 2026, for Diwali Balipratipada. Muhurat trading runs on Sunday, 8 November, from 2:20 PM to 3:30 PM.

Are FIIs still short in Nifty index futures?

Yes. FIIs held a net short of 1,00,416 index futures contracts on 6 November 2026, down from 1,85,979 on 4 November. They are reducing shorts but remain net short.

The Bottom Line

Foreign funds bought ₹45,960 crore in the week ending 6 November 2026, domestic funds sold into the rally, and the Nifty crossed 25,000 with its best week in nearly six years. Cheaper crude, a firmer rupee and lower yields drew FIIs back.

The caution is that FIIs remain net short in index futures, market breadth was weak on Friday, and 2026 is still a year of heavy net selling. As a next step, follow the evening FII and DII data through the short week and watch the MSCI announcement on 11 November before changing positions.
