A near 3% fall in Japan’s Nikkei and early US midterm election results are weighing on sentiment this morning.

FII DII Data and Market Setup

Provisional NSE figures for 3 November show FIIs bought Rs 20,285 crore and sold Rs 13,428 crore, a net purchase of Rs 6,857 crore. DIIs bought Rs 14,529 crore and sold Rs 18,488 crore, making them net sellers of Rs 3,959 crore. This is the third straight session of large FII buying, after Rs 3,599 crore on 30 October and Rs 3,115 crore on 2 November. You can track every session on our FII DII data today page.

The latest FII Market Setup we have published is for 2 November, and it reads “Strong Buying”. That label means FIIs bought shares in the cash market and also added net long positions in index futures on the same day. The setup for 3 November had not been updated at the time of writing, so we are not assigning a label for that day.

The longer view is more cautious. Over the 30 sessions from 18 September to 2 November, FIIs sold a net Rs 78,416 crore and were sellers on 21 of 30 days, while DIIs bought Rs 1,02,657 crore. That is a DII absorption ratio of 131%, which means domestic buying more than covered foreign selling. See the full history on our FII and DII data dashboard and the FII flow vs Nifty chart.

Global Cues

Wall Street ended Tuesday mixed. The Nasdaq Composite gained 0.83% and the S&P 500 rose about 0.37% as chip stocks recovered, while the Dow slipped 0.38%. The mood turned weaker overnight as early US midterm results showed Democrats leading, and US stock futures turned lower in Asian hours. Some investors expect a Democratic win to bring tighter rules for large technology companies.

In Asia, the Nikkei 225 dropped about 3%, Kospi fell about 1.5% and the Hang Seng was slightly lower. Brent crude is trading near $103 to $104 a barrel after settling lower on Tuesday, as traders weigh reports of US-Iran talks. Softer oil is a positive for India as a large importer. The US 10-year Treasury yield is near 4.91% to 4.96%. We could not confirm the dollar index and USD/INR in two sources, so we have left them out.

Nifty and Bank Nifty Levels to Watch

  • Nifty previous close: 23,810.85 (3 November). GIFT Nifty near 23,710 to 23,729 places the indicated open below this level.
  • Round numbers: 24,000 is the nearest major round level above; 23,500 is the nearest round level below.
  • Prior close: 23,440.80 (2 November), the base for Tuesday’s 1.58% gain.
  • Bank Nifty: it gained 0.98% on Tuesday, but we could not confirm its closing level, high and low in two sources, so we are not listing levels today.

We have also left out the Nifty’s intraday high and low for 3 November because they could not be verified before publishing. These are reference levels only, not trading calls.

Events Today

  • Q2 results: Apollo Hospitals, Dabur India, NHPC and Zydus Lifesciences are among the companies scheduled to report today, as per announced board-meeting dates.
  • US midterm election results: vote counting continues and is the main global driver today.
  • No expiry today: our FII DII calendar lists no expiry or holiday for 4 November. The weekly Nifty expiry was on 3 November.
  • Coming up: Diwali Muhurat Trading on Sunday, 8 November, from 2:20 PM to 3:30 PM IST.

The Bottom Line

Cues point to a softer start after a four-day rally, led by weak Asian markets and falling US futures as election results come in. Steady FII buying and lower crude prices offer some support. It may help to watch whether the Nifty holds near Tuesday’s close of 23,810.85 or slips toward 23,500 in the first hour.
