Record Date and Ex-Date Explained
The record date is the day on which a company checks who its shareholders are for a dividend, split or bonus. Under T+1 settlement, the ex-date is the same day as the record date. To be eligible, you need to buy the shares before the ex-date, that is, by the previous trading session at the latest. On the ex-date the share price usually adjusts for the dividend or the new share count.
Why Corporate Actions Matter for Traders
- Dividends: the stock price drops by roughly the dividend amount on the ex-date.
- Splits and bonus issues: the price adjusts for the new share count, while the value of your holding stays the same.
- Results: quarterly numbers often cause the biggest single-day moves, and FII and DII flows in a stock can change after results.
- IPO dates: large listings can pull money from the secondary market around the bidding window.

When should I buy a stock to get the dividend?
Buy before the ex-date. With T+1 settlement the ex-date and record date fall on the same day, so a purchase on the ex-date itself does not qualify.
Does a stock split change the value of my holding?
No. A split increases the number of shares and lowers the price per share in the same ratio, so the total value stays the same on the ex-date.
How often is this calendar updated?
