FPIs Pulled ₹48,056 Crore From Indian Stocks in October, but Not From IPOs

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) pulled ₹48,056 crore out of Indian equities in October up to the 23rd, as per depository data reported on 25 October 2026. Yet in the same week, the ₹30,213 crore Jio Platforms IPO closed with qualified institutional bids at 70.55 times the shares on offer. That split, selling what is listed while chasing what is new, is the clearest pattern in FPI behaviour this year, and it matters as Jio lists on Wednesday, 28 October.

What Happened: Heavy FPI Selling, Record IPO Demand

October is shaping up as the second straight month of large foreign outflows. The depository figure of ₹48,056 crore takes total FPI equity outflows for 2026 to about ₹3.08 lakh crore, close to double the ₹1.66 lakh crore seen in all of 2025, as per Free Press Journal.

The exchange numbers are a little heavier. NSE provisional data shows FIIs sold a net ₹51,466 crore in the cash market from 1 to 23 October, while DIIs bought ₹59,110 crore. The two series differ because depository data also counts money going into IPOs and other primary market deals, while the NSE figure covers only trades in listed shares. You can follow the daily numbers on our FII DII cash market daily summary.

Meanwhile the Jio Platforms issue, which closed on 23 October, was subscribed 22.19 times overall. The QIB portion was covered 70.55 times, NIIs 14 times and retail 2.72 times, Business Standard reported. Total demand, including the anchor book, crossed ₹7.4 lakh crore from about 1.39 crore applications.

Why FPIs Sell Listed Stocks but Buy IPOs

Bar chart of FPI selling in listed stocks versus FPI buying in IPOs for 2024, 2025 and 2026 year to date

This is not a one-off. Prime Database figures quoted by Business Standard on 14 October show FPIs sold ₹2.40 lakh crore of listed shares in 2025 but put ₹73,910 crore into the primary market. In 2026 the gap is wider still: ₹3.15 lakh crore sold in the secondary market up to September, against ₹55,524 crore bought through IPOs and similar deals.

Three reasons stand out. First, IPOs give access to businesses a fund cannot buy on the exchange. Second, analysts quoted in that report say part of the IPO buying is tactical, aimed at listing gains rather than a long hold. Third, FPIs are making stock-specific bets, not a broad call on India.

The selling in listed stocks has its own drivers. Brent crude for December settled at $116 a barrel on 23 October, up 6.2% for the week, as per Upstox. Analysts also point to weak earnings and the liquidity that the ₹30,213 crore Jio issue pulled out of the market. One small positive: the US 10-year yield eased from 5.36% to around 5% during the week, and FPIs were net buyers on two of the four sessions. What It Means for Nifty, Bank Nifty and Traders

The Nifty 50 ended the week of 23 October at 22,600, down about 2.3%, with every session closing lower. The damage was far worse lower down: the Nifty Midcap 150 lost 5.2% and the Smallcap 250 fell 7.2% in the same week, while India VIX rose 20%.

Bank Nifty fell 2.79% on the week, as per Goodreturns, with support near 53,800 and resistance at 54,800. Money that FPIs put into Jio does not support existing Nifty or bank stocks, so heavy IPO buying can sit alongside a falling index.

The derivatives data still leans bearish. FIIs held a net short of about 2.80 lakh contracts in index futures at the end of 23 October, as per Quantsapp participant data. Track how that changes around expiry on our participant-wise open interest page and the FII long short ratio.

Practical takeaway: do not read IPO oversubscription as a sign that foreign money is returning to the index. Watch the daily NSE cash figure instead. Three or four sessions of FII net buying, with Nifty holding above 22,840, would be the first real sign of a turn. Until then, Upstox analysts see support at 22,372 and then 22,217.

What to Watch This Week (26 to 30 October 2026)

  • 26 October (Mon): Jio Platforms share allotment.
  • 27 October (Tue): Nifty monthly F&O expiry. Rollover data will show whether FIIs carry their index futures shorts into November.
  • 28 October (Wed): Jio Platforms lists on NSE and BSE. The US Fed announces its decision the same day (US time), with markets expecting a hold at 3.75% to 4.00%.
  • Later in the week: Q2 results from L&T, Maruti Suzuki, Bajaj Auto, Tata Steel, Hindustan Unilever and others, plus the Bank of Japan decision.
  • All week: Brent crude near $116. Any easing would remove the biggest pressure on FPI flows.

The Bottom Line

FPIs have taken ₹48,056 crore out of Indian equities in October so far, yet they remain eager buyers when a large, unique company like Jio comes to market. The bull case: foreign investors still want India, at the right price and in the right names. The bear case: IPO buying is tactical and does nothing for listed stocks, where selling has run for three years.

Jio’s listing on 28 October and the Fed decision the same day will test both views. For traders, the daily FII cash number on our FII DII data page remains a better guide than any subscription figure.

How much did FPIs sell in October 2026?

As per depository data reported on 25 October 2026, FPIs pulled ₹48,056 crore out of Indian equities from 1 to 23 October. NSE provisional data shows FII net selling of ₹51,466 crore in the cash market over the same period.

Why do FPIs buy IPOs while selling Indian stocks?

IPOs offer access to companies that are not listed yet, and some of the buying is aimed at listing gains. Prime Database data shows FPIs bought ₹55,524 crore in the primary market in 2026 while selling ₹3.15 lakh crore of listed shares up to September.

When does Jio Platforms list on the stock exchanges?

Jio Platforms is scheduled to list on NSE and BSE on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, after share allotment on 26 October. The ₹30,213 crore issue was subscribed 22.19 times overall.
