What the FPI Sector Data Shows

  • IT was the only big sector with buying. FPIs added ₹2,599 crore to IT stocks while selling almost everything else.
  • Financials led the selling. Banks and financial services are the largest FPI holding in India, so they usually see the biggest rupee outflows when foreign funds cut exposure.
  • Selling was broad. Consumer goods, autos, healthcare, telecom, capital goods, metals and energy each saw outflows of more than ₹3,600 crore in two weeks.

How to Read FPI Sector-wise Flows

Sector data is net investment in rupees for the fortnight, so large sectors will naturally show larger numbers. Compare a sector’s flow with its earlier fortnights rather than with other sectors. A sector that moves from selling to buying for two or more fortnights in a row is worth watching. Sector figures come from NSDL and include primary market investments, so their total will not match the exchange-based numbers on our daily FII DII data page.
